Nothing I have ever thought or seen before

10 Feb

I was standing in front of the microwave today, waiting for my vegetable beef stew to finish heating when I glanced out my back window and noticed how much light was coming in. I opened the blinds to see a bright, snow-sparkly day and my neighbor’s dogs lying dead-still in their yard. And you know how the mind goes. Knowing they had puppies inside, I thought, “Oh, I hope they aren’t dead. Of course they aren’t dead, idiot. Why would both dogs be lying dead in the backyard? I don’t know. Maybe they ate some rat poison.” And this goes on for a few minutes with me knowing the dogs aren’t dead but also hoping the dogs aren’t dead. And then, this: “If I believe God has power over all things, even the devil (who probably would kill doggy parents with rat poison) then why do I hope for anything? If it happens, it must be from Him.”  Therefore, I should have no reason ever to hope, nor to be disappointed but only to be thankful because even when I don’t understand, He is still at work.

And, being given this thought, I forgot about the dogs and saw the sun and the shadows on the snow. And it was like nothing I had ever seen before. The shadow of a big, bare tree on frozen snow as smooth as silk. I was grateful for  seeing such an interesting and beautiful sight. And I wanted to take a picture. And that is where I went wrong because here is what I got.

Notice my hand and camera sticking out from the tree

This picture captured none of the magic. So, I looked around for a way, a better way, to share with everyone else the simple and pure strangeness I was seeing. And the sparkle! And when I turned to see what I might be able to capture, I found this:

Please don't tell Smokey. He would be humiliated.

Well. Sorry. I guess that beautifulness was for my eyes only.
